What Kind of Toothwort Is It?

What Kind of Toothwort Is It? by Jennifer Schlick.
The leaves seem weird... not quite cut-leaved, not quite like regular toothwort... Do they hybridize?

Rich deciduous woods - western New York, late April.

Would appreciate any help from the ID Please crowd!

Perhaps this is Cardamine diphylla?
Within Europe Toothwort refers to chlorophyll devoid parasitic herbs.

Thanks, Nuytsia@Tas... It may be. I'll have to go back and look for it again. If it is, it is a new species for me... ('course, I'm just a beginner...)

In the northeastern US the Cardamines that used to be in the genus Dentaria go by the common name toothwort, so you're both right. This is the trouble with common names! Jennifer, the leaves on this species are quite variable, I would say that it is cut-leaved toothwort (Cardamine concatenata) rather then the regular variety (Cardamine diphylla) .

Looks like cutleaf to me but I do agree that it is a toothwart species!

I see three leaves on the stem, which is not the usual for C. diphylla, though I have been told that it happens once in a while. At least that top leaf is distinctly alternate, which is not the usual for C. concatenata. There is a rare hybrid between the two (C. maxima, which has three distinctly alternate stem leaves, but the leaves are broad like diphylla. I can't pin a name on this one.
