Houston, Luby's Restaurant, Waugh Drive, April 17, 2012, during the Texas Library Association's Annual Conference. All three met as members of the Gulf Coast chapter of the American Mensa Association in Houston in the early 1970s. Joann (center) passed away in July, 2014.
Joann was a University of Houston graduate. She received her Bachelor of Science in Education in May 1963 and her Master’s Degree in Occupational Education in May 1991. Joann was employed by Lockheed Electronics from 1964-1971 as a member of the Science Support Team of NASA's Apollo 11, supporting the astronauts during the first lunar landing. In 1971, Joann began a career with Houston ISD’s Occupational Awareness Program, educating elementary school children about the world of employment. In 1980, Mrs. Scott began a career in the Oil and Gas industry and worked for several energy companies, and then for the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service. In 1988, Mrs. Scott re-joined Houston ISD, writing Federal Funding grant applications and successfully winning large grants for HISD. Joann retired in 1996. Joann was named in five editions of "Who's Who of American Women" for her outstanding achievements in community service. Among her accomplishments, Joann served as Vice President of the Gulf Coast Chapter of the American Mensa Association. She served as a member of the American Society of Training and Development, the National Society for Performance and Instruction, the Houston Geological Society, the Project Management Institute, and she was a Lifetime member of The University of Houston's Alumni Association. She taught classes through Leisure Learning. A moving memorial service was organized for Joann by her daughter, Debra Bloch, in July.
