No MySpace Please

No MySpace Please by Jeff Kreger.
I read Michael Stephen's blog Tame The Web and always see interesting public notice signs. Here's one from one of our branches.

****
A little more background. That picture is from a branch connected to a High School. There is security at the branch all day and even the local sheriffs stopping by after school lets out to make sure everything is in order. We have 32 public PCs and they felt not enough staff to keep watch. Complaints were made about students grouping around the machines and making noise so the decision was made between our director and the schools superintendent to not allow anyone to use it. I get a chuckle out of the whole thing!

Wow, that's mindboggling in its wrongheadedness. They're even "showing you the door" with the clip art.

It's sad but we do the same thing at my library. The board believes there's too much on myspace that can hurt the kids, so we're stuck banning them everytime they get caught going there. I wonder if the signs are actually effective or if they just give kids a sense that they aren't welcome? I know that's how they feel here at my library.

Since when does a library board have the right to decide what is harmful to kids? Don't we learn life lessons from choices we make? Good God, I am so sick of people trying to decide what is best for (potentially) my child.

The board needs to be reminded that libraries exist to offer all kinds of information, not just the kind they think is best for kids.

Besides the fact that adults and the media make MySpace out to seem evil when it's not... doesn't it just make MySpace seem more enticing to kids if it's prohibited?
