Thank you for sharing this. I had my beloved pet Ranger out down this morning. He was a 14 year old Golden Retriever but he had been in congestive heart failure the last 3 years. The vet said I gave him a few more good years but he no longer would get up and had to get help to carry him in. He had a couple of seizures lately and been in and out of vet hospital on massive amounts of medications. He sat up and even looked scared and stared at me as the life went out of him. I felt he was asking why I was doing this and am so guilt ridden now. I do have 2 more Goldens. 1 is 10 and 1 is 8. Not looking forward to this again. I still am worried if I did the right thing.

Your dog cannot suffer any longer. You did the right thing. I had my precious little guy put to sleep three months ago and my grief is intense. He was in intense crying pain. I can't even think about another dog yet for the same reasons you dread the future with the other dogs. The only thing I can think to say is that enjoy the love and joy the other two dogs give you now and don't worry about something that's not here yet.
