Designed by Michael Graves with Alan Lapidus (the son of Morris Lapidus, designer of the Fontainebleau), the Swan and Dolphins may be the ultimate expression of Whimsical Architecture. At the very minimum, they are certainly some of the largest structures of this design type.
The buildings borrow quite a bit from the past as they feature columns, pediments, arches, and other historic details, which is then combined with a number of water fountains, statues including a 63 foot dolphin and 47 foot swans and a turquoise and coral color scheme that includes wave shapes on the building. The Dolphin is quite angular with a triangle center tower section while the Swan features cuvers with a gentle arching roofline.
When taken in as a whole, the Swan and Dolphin is an 'almost' overwhelming over the top design. However, when appreciating the details, the splendor of it all does become a bit clearer.
