To create an exterior for Spaceship Earth as novel as the show inside, the world's largest geodesic shpere "geosphere" was built. It is supported by three pairs of steel legs and appears to be almost floarting in space 15 feet above the ground. This unique structure is a dramatic ceneterpiece for guest entering Future World.
With an outside skin of highly reflective brushed aluminum, Spaceship Earth is 165 feet in diamteter, it encompasses 2.2 million cubic feet of space and has an outside surface area of 150,000 square feet.
One of the design objectives was to make Spaceship Earth dominate the entrance to EPCOT Center and serve as the landmark structure, but at the same time it had to complement the design of Earth Station, the Monorail Station and the main entrance. It had to function as one visually unified whole. The same building material were used thoughout the adjoining buildings as one means of accomplishing this.
Speaceship Earth is actually two separate spherical structures one inside the other. The inner sphere is composed of 1450 structural steel members arragned in a giant triangular fashion and is the weatherproof enclosure for the show. The outer sphere is held about two feet away from the inner core by aluminum hubs and contains the support frames for the 954 traingular pannels.
The 180 foot perisphere built for the 1939 World's Fair and the US Pavilion for the Montreal Expo '67 had the most influence in Spaceship Earth's design.
