The Enchanted Tiki Room

The Enchanted Tiki Room

One of the greatest surving remnants of the Polynesian craze that swept through America during the 1950s and 60s. Its a shame that they dont serve rum drinks in tiki mugs with little umbrellas while you wait in the queue.

The Cosmic Cathedral

The Cosmic Cathedral

The Rose Centre for Earth and Space at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Designed by James Stewart Polshek and Todd Schliemann, the new building consists of a six-story high glass cube enclosing a 87-foot (27 m) illuminated sphere that appears to float — although it is actually supported by truss work.

The transparency of the building, says James Stewart Polshek, "makes a clear statement about the accessibility of scientific inquiry and our faith in the future. What I had originally conceived of as an iconic scientific tool evolved into a 'cosmic cathedral', an intensely memorable spatial experience that is intended to awe and inspire visitors and to expand their understanding of the wonders of our universe."

The David H. Koch Theater

The David H. Koch Theater

The David H. Koch Theater (F/K/A the New York State Theater) was built with funds from the State of New York as part of New York State's cultural participation in the 1964–1965 World's Fair. The theater was designed by architect Philip Johnson and opened on April 23, 1964.

The Theater's promonade area features inlaid Travertine marble floors, forty-foot gold leaf ceilings, dramatic spiral staircases and balconies overlooking the fountain in the Plaza of Lincoln Center. The Auditorium seats 2,586 with five Ring levels studded with "jewel" faceted lights. An immense spherical chandelier is the centerpiece of the ornately paneled gold ceiling.

In July 2008, philanthropist David H. Koch pledged to provide $100 million over the next 10 years for the purpose of renovating the theater and providing for an operating and maintenance endowment. It was renamed the David H. Koch Theater at the New York City Ballet Winter gala, Tuesday, November 25, of that year.
