I have been wanting to see the A380 wing barge for over a year now, and finally I got to see it today. It is very impressive, and there is very little clearance with the bridges - careful use of tidetables must be needed to give enough draught for the barge not to ground, but also not too high or it will hit a bridge. The tide was coming in as the barge went downstream, presumably to give more control to fine-tune the steering near the bridges. A fascinating sight.

At last I got to see the Airbus A380 barge today. Here it is going under the famous Blue Bridge at Queensferry near Chester. The wings are manufactured at Broughton, then taken by barge to Mostyn Dock where they are loaded onto a special ship to be taken to Toulouse. The clearance under the bridge was not huge! A colour-coded sign is on the previous bridge to indicate if the barge can go forward with the indicated amount of water running in the river. It was still just on green! Much later and it would have been amber or red! Scary.
