Goose barnacles writhe in the morning air. Throughout the day the beating sun dampened their enthusiasm but eventually the tide returned and carried their tidewracked beam back out to sea
The portion of Freshwater track nearest Rainbow Beach was quite dense. I turned on my lights both times just so I could see the guages clearly inside the car
One new piece of kit that I only started playing with at the last minute was the tarp. It'll be the first thing I put up next time
At the zenith of high-tide all manner of 4WD shennanigans played out in front of my camp. Luckily this particular case of bogged softroader, high tire pressures, cheap rope and free-roaming infants didn't end in tears

The new tent is a little more finicky to setup than others I've tried, but I'm sure I'll get better at it with practise
At first glance the larger Goose Barnacles are obvious, but then you notice ever-smaller barnacles and ultimately barnacles gowing on barnacles (so meta)
Eventually the rising tide came back to collect the barnacle-encrusted log it had deposited on the beach during the night
Being october I my neighbours on the beach weren't too close (until friday rolled around). Mostly quiet with the occassional sea eagle gliding overhead
Pandanus look cool from a distance but up-close their geometric goodness is even coolor
I decided that calling this a dune-grass seed probably wasn't right, so after a bit of googling I can say that this is in fact a female inflorescence of the Sand Spinifex grass (spinifex sericeus). Eventually the spiky sphere breaks off and rolls along l
I've taken many pictures of these plants before on previous camping trips but had never bothered learning what they are. Well, this time I did: Goat's-foot convolvulus
The view I woke up to each morning. On my last morning there I saw a black dog (probably not a dingo) silently padding towards my camp (when he realised I hadn't left any food out he kept on going)

Interesting stuff is always washing up into the intertidal zone. Whilst taking sunrise photos I came across a 2m long beam encrusted with writhing Goose barnacles
Apparently the upper portion of the beach, where the spinifex and goat's-foot grows, is called the 'pioneer zone' after those plants which constantly try to colonise the ever-moving sand
