jayne at Washington state line
April 25, 2010, I cross a state line for the first time riding my own motorcycle. I'm at Dismal Nitch, a tiny state park on the Columbia River on the site where the Corps of Discovery was pinned down by fierce winds and high waves at the rocky shoreline for several days once upon a time. Clark called the site a "dismal little nitch" in his journal, recounting the misery the group encountered there. We had MUCH better luck. I wasn't crazy about the oh-so-high Astoria-Megler Bridge over the Columbia River that lead to this site, however... The day didn't start well back in Oregon (almost had a spill because I stopped too fast using the back wheel break). Very glad it turned into such a great ride (I rode 257 miles total, my longest ride in a day ever). Not pictured but easily seen from the park: Snow-covered Mt. St. Helen's. My motorcycle is a 1982 Honda CB 650 SC Nighthawk. Photo by Stefan Dietz.
