fires in the sky

fires in the sky by john curley.
The smoke and haze from a thousand fires burning in northern California has made the evening sky in the Bay Area an eerie red.

Very strange, indeed.
Excellent depiction.
And next week I'll get to see for myself.

Yow. Unfortunately, those red skies are a familiar sight. Beautiful capture, though.

Hope everyone up in NorCal is okay.

thanks very much all.

it does feel odd to be kind of capitalizing on disaster, tho.

john, it is not really capitalizing there is beauty in everything. (though in certain cruel and extreme circumstances one may wonder)

a poem....

Fire on the Hills
Robinson Jeffers

The deer were bounding like blown leaves
Under the smoke in front the roaring wave of the brush-fire;
I thought of the smaller lives that were caught.
Beauty is not always lovely; the fire was beautiful, the terror
Of the deer was beautiful; and when I returned
Down the back slopes after the fire had gone by, an eagle
Was perched on the jag of a burnt pine,
Insolent and gorged, cloaked in the folded storms of his shoulders
He had come from far off for the good hunting
With fire for his beater to drive the game; the sky was merciless
Blue, and the hills merciless black,
The sombre-feathered great bird sleepily merciless between them.
I thought, painfully, but the whole mind,
The destruction that brings an eagle from heaven is better than men.

i've been reading about this in whatever english papers we've been able to pick up and on-line. It's been such a terrible year for fire and the summer has only begun!

i agree that this is simple and beautiful.

not home yet. just arrived in paris. i return on july 8th.

That is a seriously hot looking sun. I was in LA all last week and they haven't been affected by the forest fires down there yet (thankfully). Nice shot with the birds flying by.
