Done!

Done! by JavaMoose.
I refit the original knob, even though it no-longer controls anything. Also, you can see where the headphones plug in.

Actually, I should have mentioned this, I made sure there is enough room under the iPod to store the Charger/Cable and Earphones in the GeigerPod when all closed up. Makes it nice to travel with.

What a waste of an amazing piece of Cold War memorabilia. That thing should have been in a museum, not turned into a kitchy arts and crafts project.

Except of course for the fact you can buy them on eBay common-place now. Hell, I own one, a radiation survey meter, a few dosimeters, et cetera. (In reference to the Museum Comment)

I really wanted to do that, and would have, but the click-wheel doesn't even come close to lining up with the knob.

Carl - Yeah, It actually would be pretty easy to add a pair of speakers to this...

I may just have to do that when I re-do the wand.

JavaMoose - you could build a small-tooth gear unit, perhaps, if there were enough room between the ipod pad and the top of the case, and transfer that rotational power! ;)

I have to warn you because I'm a nice guy. Civil Defense Geiger counters such as yours had a radioactive source on the side to test the counter to make sure it was working (on the side opposite the sticker, I believe). Did you test for this; did you remove it?

It won't kill, but methinks the iPod hard drive won't like it.
(PS: Use a Geiger counter that's not 50 years old to test for it.)

Brain_Recall: It seems that the Uranium test-source had been removed from this before I acquired it.

Good thing too, I sanded it down really well (wore a mask, but still) before painting it!

Great mod, forgive me for being slightly pessimistic, but doesn't the lack of access to the ipod's 'wheel' kind of restrict functionality?

For the original knob controlling the iPod click-wheel:

How about free-spinning disc the same diameter of the iPod click-wheel attached to the case above the iPod click-wheel. Have a soft knob come off the disc and be in contact with the iPod click-wheel. Use a small rubber belt to connect the disc to the rotating Geiger knob.
Posted 48 months ago. ( permalink )

view profile

JavaMoose says:

The problem with making the Knob control the click-wheel is that the iPod click-wheel is capacitive - it won't work with a rubber nib.

If you want the remote to have more control over the iPod, you might want to work with the remote protocol itself. With a simple microcontroller and an encoder for the wheel, you could excersize a lot of control over the thing.

Kapgar, nope. Just unclip the rear latch and tilt up the back. I made sure there was plenty of room to easily attach the sync cable...

nice work by the way,

but to me it seams like you have a lot of space kicking around... how about an extra hard drive, external connection points maybe behind a trap door, speakers and a spare power source perhaps an old laptop battery...

seams to me that the case could be just the begining :)
