Handrail Attachment Detail

One of the major improvements was to add a handrail. I came up with this idea for attaching it to the steel column. I'd never used a step-bit before but drilling holes in the steel flanges was a cake walk.

Oddly enough, I'd say the biggest suprise of the whole project was just how hard it was to screw into that oak handrail. We drilled pilot holes and then reamed them out even larger. Johnny sheared off two screws until we figured we needed shorter and stronger screws. You just never know where the suprises are, huh?
