I can hear the water lapping at the dock and the pontoons of the float plane. I've done this before and it never gets 'old hat'. I climb up the three steps on the ladder and fit myself in thru the portal. The other 5 passengers follow. I sit down onto the canvas hammock style seat with a directors style back and pull the lap belt across and snug it up. Functional is the only way to describe it. Comfort is not a consideration here, only weight.

The pilot enters, pulls the door to and closes it. Then checks for loose luggage. On these planes almost everything is secured in some kind of mesh no 'overhead luggage bins' here.

He stoops low and slowly works his way past passengers to the pilot's seat, puts on his headset, checks gauges, flips the switches to the engines and then cranks. First engine… second engine. He waves at the kid on the dock holding the tether and the kid gives the pontoon a shove from the dock with his booted foot. He's done it before.

Now it starts… 40 years later and it's still never 'old hat' (click on the image for a detail view)
