spent yesterday wandering around southampton searching for traces of
the titanic. this is the docks where she set sail from, just the other
side of that long silver passenger terminal. it's all private so you
can't actually see the view from that point. this wee boat was moored
up, obviously not titanic in size but it did have one matching funnel.
549 people from southampton died in the disaster (all crew except one)
so it was a major catastrophy for the city. there is a beautiful
monument for the engineers who died but very little to remember the
everyday deck scrubbers and washer-uppers...it feels like it's time
they were given their own memorial, something that recognizes the loss
to all the local families.
