      By 'fill flash' do you just mean... using a flash? I thought that would have created too much light and made the image flat and boring. Thanks for the advice... really I have very little idea how to use a camera

      It is not just flash; but flash with less power. Most new cameras has a setting to use the built in flash in such a less powerful mode. Otherwise, what we can do is to keep a diffuser over the flash. This is much better. A diffuser will just make harsh light of the flash (that was your fear) into a diffused light which will give you fantastic portraits.
