Just in case

A female wolf spider (exact species unknown at this point) with egg case attached. I discovered her while weeding the garden and she was kind enough to stay put while I went inside to get my camera.

Wolf spiders tote their egg sacs around until the eggs hatch, then bite the sac open and the spiderlings climb aboard mom. They ride around for a few days and the young gradually disperse. And do you think they ever find time to call mom after that? Oy.

Country morning

The day dawns at Garfield Farm near Geneva, Illinois. This 160+ year-old farm served as a community center and rest stop for travelers crossing the prairie in the early 1800s.

Summer morning at the Garfield farm

The original barn, built in 1842 near Geneva, Illinois. Timothy Garfield built a farm and inn on the site in the early 1800s. I photographed the site last Saturday morning for a couple of magazines that will feature the farm's restoration work. A morning rain shower had just passed through and the rising sun was just peeking through the treeline across the road. Single image HDR.
