You know, I have a lot of books. I also have a lot of bookshelves, but not enough shelves to hold all the books I own, especially because it’s a guarantee that sometime in the future I will own more books than I currently do. So maybe I could use the shoes as bookends.

I would go with this idea. You could mount each shoe on a rough hewn piece of wood to turn them into quite chunky bookend-cum-sculptures ;-)
