By the light of the silvery moon

Orion's belt
Since this is a blind grab, I thought I'd crop here and clean up...
<--- here
The red giant Bettlejuise
Shooting star!
What is that?! It scared the crap out of me when i viewed the large size.
i see slight moon movement, i thought that would happen only to me :-)
Limando, that is the result of covering the lens I'm sure ;-)
Thats car headlights lol
Nope... gas/cloud streak!
Actually, a contrail ;-)

Okay so I got a little carried away. This is a blind pan/zoom with a lens change! Ouch the dust. I felt like an ole time photographer with the cloak over the gear.

Thanks much, I'd loe to see someone else try this...

Just bulb mode. Most of the exposure is black under my cloak setting up the shot. About 1/8 second on the moon w/zoom lens and 12 seconds on the scene w/prime. So 132 seconds in the dark. I'll try to get faster ;-)

Thanks E!

Thanks M!

i tried a few tonight really hard stuff. the ones that came out okay were shakey and i think my cameras double exposure might work but then can do a digital zoom.

i posted mine its actually two exposures combined in photoshop but its the best that came out same basic idea. i just put the moon over the image blended it at 50 percent. then flattened and screened it because it was dulled from all the black in the moon shot. iam going to try again for sure.

Yeah, it took me awhile to get anything of note. I think a film cam w/ double exposure mode would be awesome because the second shot wouldn't be blind...

isnt the same theory with digital as with film? or does digital act differntly to black?
Posted 36 months ago. ( permalink )

view profile

jah~  Pro User  says:

@Eric, if you mean the second shot not being blind, there are some film cameras that allow you to not advance the film to expose the roll in the same frame twice. I don't have one, but Zeb Andrews talks about it on his stream.
Posted 36 months ago. ( permalink )

view profile

The Capturer  Pro User  says:

ya i know most film cameras can do that and if they cant you just reload the film after you load up the moon. but why not try this on your digital??? does it not work the same way for digital?
Posted 36 months ago. ( permalink )

view profile

jah~  Pro User  says:

The way I understand it, the mirror locks up so that the light can hit the sensor while your expose a shot digitally. Once you've exposed a digital frame, that's it, there's no exposing it again. The way I do it is to expose one part, cover the lens so the exposure doesn't get ruined, then uncover and expose some more. The whole time I'm doing this the mirror (which allows us to see thru the viewfinder) is locked up and out of the way. Thus I can't see to compose the second "part" of the "one" exposure thru the viewfinder, so I call it "blind." In a film cam, you would expose the first time, rewind the film or set the cam to double expose, compose the second shot with the mirror in place, then expose the second part on the same piece of film - and thus eliminate the "blind" component. I hope that made sense and sorry if I went over stuff you already knew.

no problem i understand what your saying its just my camera as a multiexposure option i figured yours did too. and was wondering if it worked the same as film...

jah~  Pro User  says:

Interesting. No, my cam doesn't have it, but if it allows you to burn the same spot on the card twice, then, yeah, pretty much the same as film.

Dude a tripod and a remore shutter release is a MUST. I can't imagine trying it without. Of course I have a lot of bloopers that I'd never post. One of the funniest is a big mountainside with the moon burning a whole right thru the middle of it... You would never have that problem if you can see the 2nd exposure tho ;-)
Posted 36 months ago. ( permalink )

view profile

The Capturer  Pro User  says:

ya i know i had a tripod i forget what happend actually. but i hate remote shutters i just use the timers. just because i allways lose them.
Posted 36 months ago. ( permalink )

view profile

jah~  Pro User  says:

The only problem with the timer is you still have to release the shutter and that can cause shake. Altho in the blind pans it's much less of a problem because the 2nd exposure is generally very long. I hear ya about losing the remotes. Mine is actually wired (the wireless remote costs too much $$$) so it's harder to lose.
