Band of Brothers, Crossroads in Rachamps
The village of Rachamps lies north east of Noville just to the side of the main road. The 2nd and 1st battalion battalion took Rachamps the day after the capture of Noville. The 2nd battalion attacked from the south ans south west while the 1st battalion attacked from the north.
There was some shelling by the Germans when the Americans made it too the village but it eased off during the day.
Earl Hale and Joe Liebgott went into a barn to get out of the shelling, but it was filled with SS troops. A shell exploded near Hale and when he fell an SS officer pulled out a knife and slit Hale's throat. Liebgott shot the officer and the rest of the prisoners. Hale was not fatally wounded. He recovered but couldn't wear a necktie and when confronted by Patton he smugly took out some paper that gave him permission to be without it.
