Sunset on Halong Bay

Sunset on Halong Bay

I had almost given up on a proper sunset since the day was drizzly. Around 6pm, we were kayaking our way back to our junk when the clouds suddenly parted and the sun came out. Ah, what a sight!

Kao Rou!

Kao Rou!

This is one of the yummiest and cheapest meals we've had in our 3-week adventure!

For 200pesos (approx. 4.50USD), we had two big bowls of steamed rice, 1L cold red iced tea, 2 sticks of clam meat, 2 sticks of stuffed fish rolls, 2 ji rou chuan (seasoned chicken meat), 1 stick of something seafood (i couldn't understand what the lady said - cuttlefish, i think? - but she assured me it was neither pork or beef, since i don't eat either) and ohmacaroni's 2 big slices of pork!

Si He Yuan (Courtyard House)

Si He Yuan (Courtyard House)

A short bus ride and a tricycle ride from Jianshui took us to Tuanshan Village. It is one of the very few remaining medieval, fortified villages in southwest China. Hard to believe that people still live here!

In 2006, this Ming dynasty village was listed on the World Monument Fund’s 100 Most Endangered Places.

This courtyard house here, Zhang Jia Hua Yuan (Zhang Family Garden), is the grandest of all the courtyard houses in the village. The building on the center is the main hall. The one on the right is where the private quarters are, and the balcony on the left building (where I stood when I took this picture) is where the women come knit and read.

**The blacks are GRAINY! All the photos I have on Tuanshan were taken on ISO1600! In broad daylight! And I only noticed the ISO setting when we left! D'oh!
