Lifebouy at Samphire Hoe

Lifebouy at Samphire Hoe

This wildlife area was reclaimed from the sea in front of the white cliffs of Dover, using five million cubic metres of chalk marl, which was excavated from the sea bed during the creation of the Channel Tunnel from the UK to France. It was then landscaped and sown with wildflowers and grasses. This vegetation is now attracting other wildlife, including Skylarks, meadow pipits, mallards, dragonflies, damselflies, orchids etc. A competition was run by the local newspaper to find a name for the area, and Samphire Hoe was chosen because Rock Samphire was found growing in the area around the cliffs. This section of Samphire Hoe is the concrete sea wall, which is over a mile long. In the far distance you can see a P&O ferry on its way to France.

A very small amusement park seen at Dymchurch, Kent. It looks a bit grey and sad out of season.
