Sitting On The Edge Of The World

Sitting On The Edge Of The World by Ivan Makarov.
This is by far the craziest and the most dangerous photo I have ever taken in my life. Brandon is sitting on the edge of the Dead Horse Point in Moab, Utah, and if he was to fall, he was to fly about 2,000 feet down.

This photo was featured on KSL's 10 o'clock news on April 5th, 2007. Here is the video. This photo is also featured as a cover photo for Utah national parks in Welcome to Utah guide for 2009 that you may find in SLC airport or most hotels in Utah.

tanagerphoto

Thanks for pointing this. I did align the horizon before the shot, but I didn't think about his shoes when taking the shot, as he sat down after I set it all up. Got lucky there, I suppose. Hehe.. This wasn't one of those situations when you tell the person "Stay there, few more shots.. Ok, now move around a little bit, smile at me, turn around, change the pose, tilt your head, please.."

I can only enthusiastically echo what everyone else has observed: awesome, breathtaking, daring, wonderful, scary, thrilling, and most of all, crazy! :-)

With this image, Ivan, you've assured yourself a permanent spot in the flickr Hall of Legends, no question whatsoever. This is not just a beautiful landscape -- it tells a story and evokes the strongest possible emotions.

I think that after you get that ultra wide-angle zoom, you should get yourself the successor to the Nikon D200. The weathersealing will assure that you'll quest for even more daring shots under even more adverse conditions. ;) As I've said before, with your own baby Explore on the way, finances may be strained, but I think you're a natural at this and the more expensive gear would not go to waste on you -- not at all.

I have to echo another strong reaction above, which can't be repeated enough: WOW!!!

Lou Lab2112

Thank you again for one heck of a feedback - I appreciate it very much! You're right - that's my next two purchases, wide-angle lens you pointed me to, and then D200 (though I might wait till D300 comes out, possibly later this year). I even started a savings fund for that, like back when I was 8 y.o. and was saving pennies (OK, kopeks) for a new toy, something I haven't done since that age.

Haha - I forgot about that!

I've put myself in a similar situation, jumping out onto various things in the Grand Canyon. However, the biggest drop put myself on are some of the granite outcroppings on Half Dome.

This picture reminds of a similar entercounter of my own several years ago. I, along a crowd of people, was waiting to watch the sunset at almost the same spot shown in this photo. A man was sitting on the edge with his legs dangling just like Brandon did. Sunddenly, the man's teenager son grabbed his shoulder and shook him back and forth, trying to scare him for fun. His older son and wife standing nearby both laughed out loud and started to make fun of the poor man. However, none of the other toursits were as thrilled as this European family because we were all afraid he was going to fall off...

Thanks for posting this. Grand Canyon would be the next place I visit. We'll see what crazy shots we can take there.

NAUTIC

Now that's beyond rationality. Last thing anybody wanted was to go shake him, or even touch him. In fact, bunch of tourists behind him were screaming "what on earth is he doing?.."

canon350dinhand

Thanks for your feedback. I actually added some contrast, but if you've been to the place, you'd know that this is exactly how it looks. In fact, when people first drive into Moab, they think they're on Mars - that's how red everything is out there. That's why I love it - it's out of this world, and deservingly considered one of the natural Seven Wonders of the world. So I'm not sure if less contrast would do justice to this landscape.

Bravo and a kick in the butt for both of you!
I had to laugh at the idea of too much contrast... I know that area! Never.... just ask Nature to tone it down a bit, hmmm? And it IS cool that his feet luckily lined up just above the horizon... gives it MORE impact as if it needs more!

and yeah, I'd say 2-3 shots would be max on a fall!!!
