Just to add to your glory - the exhibition was discussed on the Today programme and this was one of the photos that was specifically mentioned as particularly fufilling the criteria for 'how we are now'.

Congratulations.

Tate Gallery  Pro User  says:

This photograph was selected as one of forty photographs in the How We Are Now Flickr group which invited members of the public to submit their photographs to the exhibition How We Are: Photographing Britain at Tate Britain in 2007. The Final 40 photographs were shown at Tate Britain for the last month of the exhibition and are archived on Tate Online.

We would like to congratulate D..R.. and thank all those who took part in the project.

chrisarellano its about making the everyday appear poetic and looking at things through a fresh perspective

It would have been more poetic if it were taken at sunset or with the two elderly owners sitting on it or a sequence with the two pieces sitting at the dump surrounded by rotting food. The title does make the picture though.

Its transforming the everyday around you into something new, it makes a nice change from the usual stuff on flickr, fluffy kittens, cute puppies, beautiful women, nice sunsets etc

Chrisarellano - the final forty (out of nearly 7000 submissions) were chosen by five well respected art critics. Good photography can be about a technical achievement or about 'Art'. This photo definitely falls into the second category. It's not conventionally pretty but it (sadly) says a lot about the part of Britain that D.R. lives in and makes you think a lot more than a saturated macro of a flower with narrow DOF.

Like IDM2G2S says, it's great to see something more interesting and thoughtful than the usual Explore fare celebrated. I've not been down to London but all the reports of the exhibition have been good and I hope the Tate, or another art gallery, choses to use Flickr for a project like this again.

By heck - it looks like I CAN start an argument in an empty house! ;o)
Thanks to everyone who has commented on this photo, I'm also glad it's sparked a bit of a debate. Like louisianablue2001 so rightly says; this is a reflection of certain aspects of life on Teesside - I'm sure my other photo's reflect the beauty that is evident in this area as well. The beauty is timeless and has been there for thousands of years, this project was 'How We Are Now'. That's why I chose to submit this photo to the group.
I was absolutely thrilled and a little gobsmacked when I was told it had been chosen to be in the Final 40 exhibition. I was chuffed because it's the first time I've won anything, but also a little confused as it was a little 'unusual' in it's subject matter.
I'm sure my Dad who was a keen amateur photographer, rest his soul, will be somewhere having a good chuckle to himself. 'You took a photo of a couple of armchairs!?'
Anyway, thanks again for all the comments. Prints available for a reasonable price! ;o)
