go tell it on the mountain

go tell it on the mountain

So I took a walk today, and as I shot this photograph a man walked by singing softly to himself. I didn't realize he'd given me a title for the photograph, or I'd have thanked him.

My brother Roger Lee and I were out chasing crows when we came across this roadside shrine. It was a long straight road, rarely traveled by all appearances. It wasn't even a secondary road, really—just a sort of graveled way to get from one place to another. Certainly nothing about the road would make one think it was dangerous in any way.

And yet clearly something horrible happened here. Something tragic. Something so calamitous that people felt compelled to memorialize the place where it happened. I assume the people who died here are buried elsewhere, so it speaks to the magnitude of the grief felt by their loved ones that it couldn't be contained by just one site.
