Is it just me, or does he look more hip here than he did on TV? Maybe it's the absence of glasses, or something about his hair.

I think I need to listen to that song......

To this day, Mr. Rogers is one of a VERY small handful of people I can honestly say I believe was a truly good person, through and through.

Sigh. The world sure needs a few more people like him. Happy early 80th birthday, Mr. Rogers!!

I think we can all agree that Pee-Wee Herman was not a mentally healthy replacement. People always asked Mr Rogers why did he
speak so slowly and deliberately to children. Has said it was to show that he really cared to take the time and make sure he was being understood by allowing time for facial feedback queues. As opposed to Pee Wee who seemed to be on speed and acid. I emphasized acid. "Heard any good jokes lately?"
Please send this 45 to our former NY Governor...and the new one as well.
Mr. Rogers had a fascinating life - see:

Sorry to have to disagree, but saying PeeWee was not a mentally healthy replacement for Mr. Rogers is like saying Warner Bros. cartoons are not a mentally healthy replacement for Disney's 'Bambi', Whiskeygonebad. Vanilla is nice, but I'll take Baskin Robbins 30 other flavours, thanks very much.

We raised two mentally healthy, happy boys on PeeWee ( and they never saw a single episode of Mr. Rogers ). Last month our 13-year old dug our PeeWee's Playhouse VHS collection out of the basement and we all watched the whole thing (two boxed sets!), marathon-style.

It was as fresh, engaging, inspiring, creative and overwhelmingly positive as I remember from when the boys were tykes. :-)

Thanks for the link, Whiskeygonebad. I didn't know that Mr. Rogers went to Rollins College...just a few miles from where I live.

One of the best things I heard from Mr. Rogers ( in addition to his iconic-persona-forming powers of emanating goodness and tender love) was an interview on NPR on which he discussed parodies and gibes he had received. He laughed out loud ( along with them) and agreed with most of the mockery. Remarkable.

Thanks, Paula.

It reminds me of the wags from Buffalo-- they made a list of the fifty worst record albums of all time; 48 of them were Jim Nabors covering romantic ballads of the 1940's and 50's.

I put this Mr. Rogers album beside my copies of Pee Wee Herman. They make fine companions in eternity, along with Anthony Minghella.

:) Mr. Rogers! :) I have his albums but haven't seen this! The last time I pledged to public television was to get a DVD biography on Mr. Rogers! What a sincere and delightful man.

I only brought up Pee Wee beacause his method seemed to me to be a direct opposite school of thought on how to teach kids. It was just too much an overload style. I must say that the TV production presented to kids on most shows was probably a completely different experience for children actually on the show.
I actually found Pee Wee very, very amusing on many levels.
I was too old to wathc Rogers as a kid and too old whem Herman was on.

What about those of us who really DID do something wrong?

I went and saw Camper Van Beethoven the day after Mr. Rogers died. They all came out wearing cardigans in his honor. A lot of people cried.

I'm wearing my favorite cardigan, too. It's really too warm for it, being a beautiful day in the 1960's Florida ranch neighborhood, but the air conditioning is on, Mr. McFeely has delivered the mail, King Friday XIII is laying on the couch watching his royal t.v., and all the puppets are happily purring away in their carefully selected, well-staged spots.

OK folks, Mr. Rogers or Captain Kangaroo? If I had to chose (yeah, like anyone would ever HAVE to chose), I guess I'd have to say that I'm more of a Captain K. man, myself, though not by much. Lady Aberlin may tip the scale in Mr. Rogers' favor. I had a big crush on her when I was a kid.

For what it's worth, I had "It's Such a Good Feeling to Know You're Alive" stuck in my head all last night. Which is better than, say, a Smashmouth tune.

Thanks, this had me laughing outloud. I was raised with Mr. R. and Captain Kangaroo. I missed having this record, but I guess I know some of the songs. Now this has me wondering if this is available on i-tunes. Sadly, it seems not.

Why must anyone choose 1 character over another?

I like all of 'em = )

This is a terrific cover - I'd love to hear those songs....

& FWIW, Peewee started out as a standup act for adults - I recall a bit where he had mirrors on his shoes so he could look up Miss Yvonne's skirt >= J
