Distant Relatives -- Beavertail State Park, Jamestown, Rhode Island

Distant Relatives -- Beavertail State Park, Jamestown, Rhode Island

These textures reminded me of a really weathered version of the tafoni on the Pacific Coast. Which reminds me that I need to make a trip to Salt Point State Park.

The feel of this one is a bit of a departure from my usual stuff, but I'm digging the subdued colors. I started out aiming to have this be presented in black and white, but I got to the end and pulled off the B&W layer to check it in color. This has a slight color balance adjustment that I use on my B&Ws so they have a little bit of toning to them. It makes this color version look a bit like a weathered film shot.

Polar Petroglyphs -- Tioga Lake, Eastern Sierra Nevada, California

Polar Petroglyphs -- Tioga Lake, Eastern Sierra Nevada, California

I made another quick run up to Yosemite's high country last Saturday. This time I was fortunate to have Lukas come along with me -- that definitely made the drive and the scouting more tolerable!! We scouted out both Tioga and Ellery Lakes and decided that the frosty patterns on Tioga were a better bet. Though, we were somewhat disappointed to see that the good color happened behind us in this spot and we should have actually shot from Ellery.

Oh well! :)

This image is a blend of two images for depth of field. The top four fifths from one and the bottom fifth from another.

Frigid Fractures -- Tenaya Lake, Yosemite National Park

Frigid Fractures -- Tenaya Lake, Yosemite National Park

What a way to close out 2011. It's rare that you can access Yosemite's high country this late into winter without skiing there, so I seized the opportunity and drove up for a day trip on Saturday. It was a long day but I was rewarded with some wonderful conditions on Tenaya lake and just enough sunset color to make things work well.

Happy new year! Here's making more and better images in 2012.
