My Motto

My Motto

Here's a quick mock up of what has become my motto of recent. It is a play on the old photojournalist saying "f/8 and be there." Without the motto I'd have missed a lovely snowy sunrise in Yosemite.

This weekend's "ƒ/it and be there" excursion is to Lone Pine. I've been longing for a trip to the east side since I came back from one last October. Fingers crossed the Tioga Road opens up for this weekend.

Then I go in for surgery on Monday to remove the cancer from my neck. That will begin project GTFO,C. Not quite sure yet how long that will last, but I'm looking forward to putting it all behind me so I can pick my camera back up.

Tangents -- Cataract Creek, Marin County, CA

Tangents -- Cataract Creek, Marin County, CA

Had a nice little ramble up the Cataract Creek trail early on Saturday. This place is awesome, I seem to find something completely fresh each time I visit. I wish I'd gone a bit earlier in the wet season as the creek wasn't running as hard as I would have liked.

Oh well, still quite happy with this shot.

It is a verto-rama of two shots and one -2 EV exposure blended in at the top where it was quite a bit brighter than the immediate foreground.

Muir's Melody -- Yosemite National Park, CA

Muir's Melody -- Yosemite National Park, CA

This is just a few bars, but I guarantee it will get stuck in your head. I haven't been able to shake the Yosemite Symphony since I moved to California.

After watching the webcams all day on Friday and seeing the snow accumulate, I took my new motto: "Eff it and Be there!" (a play on the "f/8 and be there" motto of photojournalists)to heart and planned to hit the valley for sunrise on Saturday.

It wasn't going to be fun waking up and driving. I headed out of the Bay Area on Saturday morning at 1:00 AM with Lukas and Josh, they agreed to slap me awake if I started to doze off. We arrived in the valley around 4:30 after not encountering any snow on the roads (thank goodness) and headed right up to Tunnel View to scope out the valley in the dim moonlight. After a half an hour or so the stars started popping out and I made a some exposures of this scene.

The image above is a blend of two exposures, one shorter at higher ISO to freeze the stars as much as possible and one longer, lower ISO exposure to capture as much detail in the valley as possible.

I hope you like it.
