Sensor Used In The New Sigma DP1
The Sigma DP1 has the same 14.1 megapixel X3 Foveon sensor, used in the Sigma SD14 DSLR announced recently.
The Sigma DP1 has a 2.5-inch LCD, RAW format capabilities, and a 16.6mm f/4 lens. Combined with Sigma’s True image processor, the new sensor promises a 40 percent increased pixel count over previous X3 image sensors, according to Sigma’s press release. The new Foveon sensor is a product of the first collaboration between Sigma and manufacturer Dongbu Electronics of Seoul, South Korea. After a year of development, the new sensor is hailed as the only image sensor that can vertically stack red, blue, and green pixels. Comprised of three layers of silicon photo sensors, the Foveon X3 is a high resolution sensor to reduce color artifacts in images.
