the stereotypical look at life under the Brooklyn Bridge

Will probably crop to this in a second try.
the stereotypical look at life under the Brooklyn Bridge by incendiarymind.
I couldn't spend the 30 or so minutes by Brooklyn Bridge shooting the activity around it on Fulton Pier without taking some pictures of the bridge itself. This is a pretty standard shot of the working monument with American flag waving and Brownstone at ground level and street traffic (and of course trees growing in Brooklyn). But, hey, I mean without the bridge would there have been so many people?

I don't like the busy foreground. I feel it could have been used better to add to the composition--- but I wasn't there so I am not sure.

By busy foreground, how much do you mean? The building and trees are part of the subject. The cars, well, there's not much way to shoot during daylight hours in Brooklyn, include ground level, and have them not be there. By itself, that borough would be the fifth largest city in the United States.

Sorry, I have to agree with countzen-- it's of course a great (and historical) subject, and as 'snapshots' go this is a good one, but if being asked to look at it with a critical eye, my eye goes to the bridge but then also to all the cars and signs below. Maybe try a wider angle from a different position? Shooting on top of the brownstone would be cool! :)

Though the foreground is busy, I like it. It adds to the buzz thats the city. I took some shot of the bridge to, but never ventured below it. So for me its not that typical.

Alright, maybe I went about titling this entirely the wrong way. The stuff happening below the bridge is supposed to distract the viewer. It's why the ground level stuff is rule of thirds. Thanks for the input. I realize a crop that would work better in bringing that idea out. I think I extended it too far left so people get the idea the bridge is supposed to be more of the subject than it is.

I think this shot would benifit from B&W definately a bit more contrast. Too much exposure on the bridge itself, I think

Goldstar: funny you should mention B&W because I kept thinking to myself, "why don't you have a single B&W from New York City" (this was before I converted the most recent shot in my photostream to it). I'll definitely try that.

Heya, just responding to your question from above:

Busy foreground meaning-- that there a lot for my eye to look at-- there are lines leading to more line and bright batches of color and so on. It distracts me attention by focusing on little thing on it.

This makes me feel uneasy with the pic, and not clearly sure of what the subject is. If foreground is a subject, and the bridge is a subject, there should be a visual connection between the two-- but the foreground has too much info and no clear visual connection to the bridge.

I feel it's hard to have a entire sceneary as a subject unless you treat it like a landscape pic. At that point the rules change a little

If there was a way to remove some of the smaller busy items it might still work. (mostly signs I think.) Imagnie with just the brownstone, the bridge and maybe the trees? Not quite sure.

But that's what I meant when I said busy foreground.

Great perspective, really like this one. I've always wanted to go there.
