honouring the subject (uni exercise)

honouring the subject (uni exercise)

• Why you choose this image as one that honours your subject

This image is of my brother, with his 1/2 hour old son. I feel it shows both the excitement, emotion as well as that scary "wow I'm a father, what do I do" feeling.

• Describe the circumstances of the photograph, and what you tried to achieve with the
image.

The circumstances were; dim light, at 6am in the morning at the maternity hospital. I was literally flying out to QLD within 2 hours (literally made the flight by 6 mins) so was a very quick case of a few snaps before I had to leave, and also while the mother was being treated after her surgery. At the time the intention was to capture images of this first moment for them to document the babies life.

• What you thought of Amy Toensing’s photo of Doug & Harry

I particularly like Amy's image, I think it is an intriguing image. Having heard now the story, i think it was a fantastic way to represent the two men.

• Your opinion as to why the photo editor did not like Amy’s photo

I think that it's possible that without the story the image is difficult to work out, hence why the editor perhaps didn't like it.

• What did the photograph convey about the lives of the two brothers –particularly in
reference to Amy’s story that she related to us

• How did the formal elements of the picture contribute to the emotional elements within
the picture?

i think it shows their relationship extremely well, the portraits looking over them, and the way Amy described that's why they have them there, so they are always looking over one another. I also like how the dog is in the middle, almost like their child. I think it demonstrates their lives very very well.
