This was taken on the same morning as this shot. It's funny, there was decent fog at the cemetery when we left. Then, while racing up Hwy 26 to the Portland Zoo exit, we were above the fog level and there was full sun. After winding down the road toward the Japanese Garden, we were back down to an elevation just low enough for fog. I love when everything falls into place.

Very cool. This tree does look like a gigantic, multi-limbed, lightning bolt shooting across the sky.

Wow you caught an amazing time with that fog.

This reminds me of the trees that J. R. R. Tolkien would write about.
I like the little drops of water on the tips of the branches. I also like the way that the top of the frame feels crowded with the tree trying to take up every inch, but the bottom is more open and peaceful.

@Darlisa - Thank you so much! This tree has so many different looks throughout the year, and it's fun to take pictures of all the little changes as one season moves into the next.
@Matt - Thanks! Yeah, it's interesting how fog can help you isolate an object, such as a tree, and make all the background clutter fade away naturally. I need to shoot in the fog more often.
@Drewski Mac - Thank you very much! I have no idea what song you were listening to when you saw this picture, but I agree that music and photos go well together.
@Russ - That's one of the things I find fascinating about japanese maples. Each one is so very unique. This one's branches are very much light lightening bolts. It's so cool.
@Mark - Thank you! Fog just transformed the Japanese Garden in the coolest way. I can't wait to shoot up there again when the fog comes back in the fall.
@Scott - Yeah, it definitely has a middle earth feel to it. It's a wonderful tree to photograph. It's probably the most photographed tree at the Japanese Garden.
