Once Off Pieces |
The forms are inspired by the
traditional Nguni artifacts.
The clay and wooden storage vessels.
The gracious simplicity of these forms
is classical and is being reinterpreted
into contemporary art pieces
for a contemporary lifestyle.
There are three Product ranges:
Afrocasso Range, Scarified Range and
Matrix range
AFRICASSO-RANGE
While studying the history of art, I
came across different artists that I
could identify with, based on their
philosophy; technique; use of color and
their interpretations of life. Pablo
Picasso is one of those great artists
that are influential within my work
along with Joan Miro; Salvador Dali and
others. Using these influences, I am
able to interpret and convey my
childhood; mythical and everyday
stories.
SCARIFIED-RANGE
This range is inspired by the African
tribal ritual of body scarification;
this is a practice that is performed by
cutting one’s flesh. It is done for
healing purposes, warriors showing
courage and also as a rite of passage
for young woman to mark the different
stages in lives.
MATRIX-RANGE
This range came about using found
objects collected while walking, objects
that seemed interesting enough to be re
used to create texture or form. I picked
up bolts; buttons; an old pricing stamp;
parts of an old type writer and computer
parts. Our studio is situated in an
industrial area and my work within this
range reflects industrial elements hence
I refer to myself as a chameleon
artist.
The artist is Majolandile Dyalvane
aka Andile
