Portrait of a Colleague

Portrait of a Colleague by Ian Hayhurst.
This young lady asked me for a portrait to use in a corporate magazine / internal project publication. I have done these in the past (mostly by virtue of having a camera with me every day, the shots used to be in-front of a plant with on-camera flashgun bounced of the ceiling. I wanted people to ask because thay liked the result rather than because I had a camera, ... Strobist to the rescue now I have 2 light stands 3 brollys and 3 flashes in the boot (and numerous other strobist bits as well)

Strobist: This was taken in a corridor (the only bit of wall I could find that didnt have something stuck to it, I'm standing in an office shooting out through the door frame,

Main light: Silver brolly with sb28dx 1/4 zoom 85 camera left

Hair /back light: Home-made black straw grid 5cm on canon 430ex camera right behind subject,

Background: Lee Magical Magenta 795 gel on sb24 1/8pwr, 35mm zoom through stacked glasses on chair by wall

Lessons learned: 30 minutes setup (practice required) less than a minute shooting
canon 430ex only fires once on cheap optical trigger (requires a powercycle before it fires again. (on optical because it misfires constantly on ebay /GI type trigger); I didnt use a tripod for once.. and for this type of shot I really don't need one... I cant believe how much detail was there when viewing at 1:1 .. so that's less to carry next time

Absolutely superb ! The lighting on the hair is great, and you've done a wonderful job on the background. The colour is excellent and it makes the photo really pop. Instant fave !

Lovely work Ian, you have done a great job on this portrait! I have found (from experimenting) with this setup that the addition of the hair light really lifts the whole picture, which you have done beautifully here. I also found that space (and lots of it) is your friend. To that end, a collapsible back drop is a great addition to your mobile kit. It removes the need to find a clear plain wall and maximises your opportunities space wise while still giving you the opportunity of controlling the background colour exactly. It adds a bit more kit to carry, but hey, without the tripod that third arm's free anyway! :)

Thanks Stuart!

Cheers Nick, I'm beginning to reach that conclusion, (a portable background) together with a kit upgrade, I'm getting fed up with ropey triggers, wobbly lightstands (actually the spigot isn't a spigot- more of a partly fixed end) and brolly adaptors.. have a hitlist now to improve the quality with any future purchases
