V. vulgaris queens 2018-10-28

While tidying up the log stores and piles I came across quite a few hibernating queen wasps. Here are just four of many I found. These are all of the same species Vespula vulgaris (abdominal markings vary, face markings best for identification). The wasp population has bombed in our area during the last two years but, judging by this lot, they're about to make a comeback. Bad news for our orchard then.
