Cthulhu Rises

Who doesn't love a Cthulhu? I've been wanting to build one for awhile. The contest over at ReBrick gave me an excuse to get to work. It placed 2nd in the ReBrick Building Challenge by the way - just found out today. (July 16)

Lots of thanks to everyone who put up with my continual reminders to go to ReBrick and vote. If it weren't for you guys taking the time to help out, I wouldn't have placed at all.

    I think it is essential to note that the "raging inferno/smoldering lava" edge around this thing's borders adds SO much to the overall MOC.

    The Cthulhu itself is absolutely awesome, the transition from the flesh/tentacle openings is AWESOME, really well done, and nice balance of number/thickness/length of tentacles. Even the eyes are handled really well, displaying a nicely crafted eyesocket along with well chosen stickers to make it menacing, intense, and deliberate.

    To me his wings are by far the weakest part of the build--much too angular, oriented in a weird way (totally vertical) and just not meshing with the rest of the creature.

    All around, this is great, the beast is fantastic, the sense of motion and fear is awesome. I'd revise the wings though.

    And again, since I didn't see it brought up in any of the comments above, I think the fiery border is one of the essential characteristics for making this MOC effective overall. Nice work.

    Wow. Thanks for such a thorough critique of the MOC - finally some detailed criticism. :) I agree that the wings are weak. I had to find a way to make them fit without hanging over the baseplate since the contest rules required every element stay within the edges of a 32x32 baseplate. So yes, I would have loved to really make the wings big and menacing.

    As to the eyes, there are no stickers - those are just two yellow and two black cheese slopes. Thanks for noticing the tentacle orientation. And thanks for all the comments about the lava/border - I like it too.
