Birds

Birds by ilina s.
Saw them on the side of the road while traveling from Rousse to Sofia (in Bulgaria). They kept moving back and forth from one side of the road to the other.

It seems they're everywhere... I wish I could add extra syllables to the word "beautiful" for special instances like this (fav .-)

a stand out thumb nail but bigger an up close im longing for the foreground in focus on this 1, spot on with the colours and the boarder works well..

@Castleblue - thank you :-) And yes, they truly were everywhere!! See here farm1.static.flickr.com/137/371179265_a30e31e 3f2_o.jpg - It felt like I was in that Hitchcock movie ;-)

@Underpinner - thanks... Indeed, I had to choose between the moving birds and the grass... It wasn't really foreground, the grass was up on the hill where the birds were. It could very well be my bad command of the camera - I don't know. The birds were constantly moving from one side of the road to the other... I didn't have much time to think what to do so I put the camera on "moving object" setting.... Should I have done something else? If you can tell me, that will really be helpful - I am an amateur, need to learn these things!!

f16 22 for more in focus depends where you were standing and wot lense... some times it all just happens a bit 2 quickly just keep buying those magazines and the science will fall into place you sure have the eye for a scene or two :-)

Truly truly wonderful atmosphere about this image!
I saw myself as a little (short) boy walking through the fields, chasing the birds ahead of me. I lifted my head to admire the cotton wool clouds festooned on the blue skies with birds in bewilderment.
For me this image has a warm feel good effect about it. Love the warm tone in the lower 3rd and the colder blue above. If I wanted to be picky, I would prefer more sharpness.
BRAVO!

@ underpinner - I will do as you said - read a lot of literature :-) I do need to, I know.

@ Leo Régnier - thanks :-)

@ aos_artofseeing - Ah, what a lovely picture you pained with words :-) I'm glad you enjoyed this picture. And, about the focus - I know you're right :-)

@ shammasi - ah, thanks. This is actually in Blugaria, I just came back from a visit there. It is very hard to come by a view like this in NYC... I'd say quite impossible even :-)

@mussy - thank you :-)
----------------------
Question for all:
I know the people who mentioned the blurriness do have a point... But I am looking at the picture again... and I wonder, if the grass was in focus, wouldn't it compete too much visually with the birds? It's a very spiky grass, and the birds are very angular shapes too. They look kind of messy flying in all directions... I don't know. What do you think?

castleblue  Pro User  says:

I think that when the image is portrayed as an artistic statement, as this is, then you have to go with how the photographer displays it, because sometimes the photographer also wears an artist hat. It's not as important to convey what we literally see sometimes, as it is to show what we felt. Some people seek a perfect visual view, and that is all well and fine, but some blur and sharpen to speak volumes of what they felt. Some images are meant to play as much to the soul as to the eye.

Personally the (creative) blur of the grass in the foreground is justified. The focus should be the birds and sky.

I love the composition and the color. I appreciate the struggles of quickly reacting to a situation and I'm not sure how much flexibility you really would of had to bring both the grassadn the birds into focus. I do know this shot makes me think I should carry my camera with me more often

They are facsinating to watch. I saw a large group of them one evening and the sun hit them just so, that when they turned at just the right angle part of the group looked like it disappeared for a second, but then would reappear to dart about some more. Excellent shot.
