A very low tide at the creek today exposed all the posts that usually stay submerged. They made some nice patterns in the view

These posts were orignally part of a gristmill that was built in 1645 by a Dutch colonist named Wolphert Gerritsen. The mill relied upon the movement of the tidal waters to turn the wheels for grinding, and may have been one of the first of its kind in the colonies. The mill remained in operation continually until the late 1800's, only to eventually burn down in the mid 1930's. It's hard to believe that this quiet spot was once a thriving place for industry and trade amongst the early settlers.
