Postcards and Postcrossing |
Another of Craig's obsessions is of a
deltiological bent. Always a hoarder
he's been collecting postcards of his
hometown, Carlisle, for many years and
has a large collection of cards - all
used. The messages are just as important
as the pictures.
In 2000 he discovered Tom Phillips'
book The Postcard Century which is a
superb account of the 20th century
viewed through 2000 postcards and their
messages. Used postcards have such
stories to tell, sometimes mundane,
sometimes fascinating.
As a follower of Found Magazine and
collector of photos found in the street
(long before Amelie!) he took up
Postcrossing - sending and receiving
cards from strangers across the world.
We often ask for sheep or knitting cards
to adorn the I Knit London shop but
anything goes...and the random messages
are a view of life elsewhere, in someone
else's head. We'll be showing here a
selection of cards from friends and
strangers....and if you want to send us
one please do:
I Knit London, 106 Lower Marsh,
Waterloo, London, SE1 7AB or join www.postcrossing.com
There are also some pics here of stamps
- it'll come as no surprise that Craig
has been a stamp collector too! These
are here only to be part of the
Postcrossing stamp group for now,
although his childhood stamp collection
is still in hand and these little works
of art may appear one day.
