I've always been vaguely perplexed at the non-climbing worlds' view on rappelling (abseiling). People tend to think of it as an activity in itself, and some commercial groups offer abseiling as an 'activity'. To climbers it's a technique for getting from A to B where B is (generally) below then A. It's fairly easy to do once you get the hang of it, and therein lies the peril. There are a gazillion things that can go wrong and it's a very unforgiving technique. It is loads of fun though :-)
