WTF douglas coupland!?

"i've basically turned my life into art school"
WTF douglas coupland!? by Kate Raynes-Goldie.
douglas coupland, canadian author, hawks the new blackberry in what appears to be an accidental spoof of the 'this is your brain, this is your brian on drugs' commercial.

i used to be a big fan, but lost most of my respect for douglas coupland when his writing turned to shit and he started making art by chewing up his books and making sculptures out of the spitty pulp. but i didn't think the cynical voice of gen x would sink as low as this.

finding this was about 10 times more upsetting than when i found out david duchovny was doing dog food commercials.

funny.. this is from the Oct 30th issue of 'The Internet Sucks' right? I've got a copy of it on my desk here at work somewhere..

There was a water cooler discussion about this ad this morning. Apparently he got paid a nice sum to do it. Very sad indeed. I liked generation x but I just couldn't get into reading Jpod last summer. Just wasn't my kind of book...

i really do like him, yes this is weird.. i liked jpod but microserfs was way better... his writing is kinda turning shitty. i got to meet him for a jpod signing and he is weird as fuck, i think he's always been. the only reason i can think of for him to have a blackberry is that he's finally gone completely crazy, he was pretty close to that when i met him. but i think i still like him.

Microserfs was pure gold. I guess I'll just make sure to stick with his earlier stuff.

Good for Doug! It's about time CanLit caught up with the rest of the world. The man is always years ahead of his peers.

From his website:

"In November 2006 I did a promotion for the Blackberry Pearl. Some people think this was weird but I dont. My fee was a terrific way to raise money for the Contemporary Art Gallery in downtown Vancouver. People can forget that as a writer your ways of fundraising for charity are extremely limited. Painters can donate paintings to auctions, but writers? Donating books is one option, but it won't raise much. To raise a meaningful sum I think you really have to put yourself out there."
