Quiet courage

Quiet courage by icyjumbo.
Our assignment for day 3 of the workshop was "frame". I saw the cloister as a series of concentric frames, and managed to persuade Rebecca to model for me. Her air of quiet courage was the perfect subject for this frame.

This is really nice. I might crop away the bits to the top and sides to just leave the arches and boost contrast a little.

We talked a bit at the workshop about whether or not the square door frame should be left in or cropped out. I felt the frame added an intimacy that was otherwise lacking, but maybe that has too much to do with my sense of space at the time the picture was taken.

I've been working on a version of this that crops away the outer frame. So far I quite like it with just the curved elements, but I haven't posted it yet because I wanted to try again to clean the noise and de-emphasize the bright patch just to the right of Rebecca's left shoulder. (If you look at the full size image, you'll see what a scrappy job of the latter correction I've made.)

It's all been a challenge to my meagre PS skills, probably more than I can really cope with at the moment. But that was part of the point of the workshop, after all.

I like the doorframe, I think it adds a sense of weight to the picture and grounds her in relation to the height of the arches behind her.
Like the arches in the background are etherial and other-worldly and the doorframe and her are very much in THIS world.

I think that the doorframe helps to "terminate" the series of arches in the ceiling behind Rebecca. If the picture were to be cropped to lose the doorframe, the arches would also become cropped off without any apparent reason and I feel that this would lose the effect they have on focussing attention on the subject. Love the stern look and the muted colours.
