According to Dieter Rams, it's eloxy aluminium. I have a similar model to yours, and on mine
the "grain" of the aluminium runs
vertically on the control side, and
horizontally on the side with the lens bulge.

Mine doesn’t have any visible grain direction. Perfectly matte surface. Perhaps you see the remainings of a cleaning with alcohol?

Well, it's very subtle and too uniform (and flowing under all the printed text) to be the result of of some post-manufacturing treatment. You can just make it out in this photo:
