really difficult book display

I've mentioned this elsewhere, but there was a horrific local crime here last week. The library made a really good effort to create an appropriate book display. Not easy. I think they did well.

Gavin De Becker's Gift of Fear is fabulous. I recommend it to everyone.

A crime like that mars the psyche of a community terribly. It's nice to see that the library is being upfront and helpful. When I was 11 years old, an horrific crime occurred just a couple of blocks away from my home. My future wife (who I would not meet for another 31 years) was best friends with the sister of the girl who was murdered. In talking about it, we were surprised to find a commonality of experience in that when kids wanted to talk about it, they were punished or hushed and/or told not to ever mention it again. I'm glad to see that communities are changing in that respect.

Wow. I enjoyed Harmful to Minors, but I'm surprised to see it there.

I've been browsing these kinds of displays since I was 6 years old and I never considered that this was how a library, as an institution, conversed with the community. Fine response to a horrifying crime.
