Palast der Republik, Summer 1977

Skoda 1000 MB WOW
Palast der Republik, Summer 1977 by Istvan.
In full bloom, a year after its opening. For the background of this series you find comments here. - I have two pictures of the same subject, I decided to upload this almost humanless version first, the second is here.

It is interesting that these enormous columns holding reflectors on public places were usual equipments over East-Europe. The Hungarian equivalents had been erected the same way: on the centre of the car parking section of once Engels (now Erzsébet again) Square, Budapest.
This photo has notes. Move your mouse over the photo to see them.

The tower on the left is the "Fernsehturm" or television tower, close to Alexanderplatz, built in 1965 and a wellknown East Berlin landmark in the former German Democratic Republic or DDR. There is a rotating restaurant in the sphere. The original total height of the tower was 365 meters, but after the installation of a new antenna in the 1990s, the height is now 368 m. The Fernsehturm is the fourth tallest freestanding structure in Europe.

Nice vintage Pic. I would like to add that pic to the wikipedia as we dont have any original pic from the palace of the republic. I would like to stitch it with your second pic here:

www.flickr.com/photos/40385587@N00/1936951625 /in/set-7215...

Can you change the license on both pics to just attribution (and share alike if you want to, but without noncommercial) as it is required in the wikipedia?

Greetings from Berlin.

Thanks for putting this up - I was just in Berlin for the last two weeks and I wondered what the Palast looked like in its "heyday." From Alexanderplatz down to Museuminsel is definitely the most interesting part of Berlin to me!

Wow, 1977! It's a very clear photo, free from a lot of grain. Love the styles of the cars! Old photos are awesome, a piece of living history! I was only 2 years old in 1977 ^_^

wow! Great quality photo for a photo from 1977. And the palast was marvelous, not same today...It's a very sad and lifeless ruin of the German history..... To late for save his, another part of the DDR history has been destroyed .....
Tragic issue....

A wonderful collection, Istvan. I never thought of Eastern Europe in colour, but these colours are so perfect for the place and time. No need for any photoshop adjustments...

The Palast der Republik is gone now. Nothing left. Only a few trabants around the world: Some Trabants still alive:
This Trabant was painted by Thierry Noir in Berlin-Halensee, on the Monday 31.12.1990. It was full moon that day.
Great to see this Trabant again in Orlando!

It a shame they demolished this building. Whether you like it or not it had been part of the history of the Germans. People have to preserve memories, not to pretend they never existed.
