Peace Procession series |
The "Peace Procession" series combines drawings based on photographs taken during the peace march that concluded the Kenya Youth Peace Summit. The summit brought together close to 200 young people from across East Africa to discuss the post-election violence in Kenya at the end of 2007. These works combine the powerful political statements made by these young people during the march with the patterns and Swahili sayings found on kangas. Kangas are brightly colored swaths of fabric used by Kenyan women as wraps and sarongs. The actions and words of these young people represent one vision for peace in East Africa, while the Swahili proverbs found on kangas represent another. Taken together, I hope these visions illustrate a tiny aspect of the Kenyan landscape.
