Christ as the Man of Sorrows. Stained glass, Switzerland c. 1650. Clear glass with enamel paint and silver stain. Victoria and Albert Museum.

The Latin above the Dominican nun (probably the donor of the window) translates as 'I am his faithful bride'.

Symmachi Panel, Victoria and Albert Museum

c. AD 400, Roman, Ivory. Inscribed in Latin 'of the Symmachi'.

Depiction of a priestess performing a rite at a pagan altar. This was part of a diptych, the other half is in the Louvre. The Symmachi were a senatorial family. Interest in ancient Roman religion continued for several decades after the imposition of Christianity as the official religion of the empire.
