And really, they'd still be a dick, but could be forgiven to an extent if they had an amazing handstyle ... but the tag is utter crap, there is no redeeming value to their defacement.

@p0psharlow "hey, tags make it better. "

No, they don't. Tags are for little men that think themselves as big giants. Whoever did the piece is confident enough in his/her art that a signature is unnecessary; tagging stuff to no art attached to your signature is just looking for attention.

Unless you were being ironic. Then "ha".

hey, im not the guy who tagged that, but dont you think that you guys should ease the fuck up? who made it your role to judge? tagging is a part of street art the same way abstraction is part of classical art. how many of you have ever tagged, painted, or made street art? i dont know, so i cant judge, but i know that i tag, and i paint, and i make some street art, and i dont see anything wrong here. street art was meant to be temporary, how long does a throwie on a wall last? not long, i can tell you. so this is the natural flow of street art. its cool art, someone saw it and tagged it, in the coming weeks people will tag over that. get over it and stop BAWWWing like kids. if your so hurt by this tagger, go make your own street art, about how taggers are lame. dont be lame and bitch.

@cracked_logic: Tagging is to street art what abstraction is to classical art? Are you fucking serious?

I dig the pixel art though. Inspiring, even if it did get defaced by a douche.

cracked_logic.

There's a difference between tagging your own blank space, and going over something that's obviously way better than anything you could think of.

Obviously the "tagger" is an idiot and straight up dissed the person who did the pixel water.

But since you seem to be such a guro of street art, I'm sure you knew that.

Hey Cracked logic,

How about if I tagged your faced with my fist?

Who the hell gave you the right to deface other people's property for your own pleasure?
Here where I live, you get you ass shot if you tag over other people's "street art" - yeah, that's right boi.

cracked_logic [deleted] says:

@carchase-i never claimed to be an expert, i just thought it unnecessary for everyone to attack the tagger. i didn't claim to be a street art guru, or to have a mastery of the fine arts.

@morose-what does it matter what term i use? tagging is a part of street art, what does it matter if i compare it to abstractionism or realism or surrealism? lets nitpick more.

i agree the piece was cooler before the tag, but its STREET ART. it happens, shit gets tagged over. painted on, buffed out, etc. grow up guys.

Wow, sweet, my comments section has become a (somewhat silly) debate about tagging! My two cents (which you didn't ask for, but damnit, it's my picture/flickr page and I'll gripe if I want to):

Yeh, tagging is part of the street art scene. We probably wouldn't have street-art in New York (or at least not as we know it and not as great as it came to be) if not for tagging. If you look at some of my other pics I even find the time to appreciate an artful tag, especially if it's got some great lettering or hand-style or character/design.

However, I do think there's an unwritten code when it comes to street-art and I feel like this tagger pissed all over it. Judging by the amount of time between when other people got this pic up and when I got this pic up, the piece didn't last long without that tag showing up. And considering the unlimited canvass that is the city, did the tagger really have to choose this piece to go over? Perhaps he/she chose it because that way it would get noticed, but tagging the wall behind it would have been JUST as effective. In fact, the tag would have stayed (while the pixel piece is now removed, to my knowledge). Considering all that, I'd say that the deliberate decision to tag this piece was a bit disrespectful and though I firmly believe in the cycle of ephemeral life in street art (and even great pieces eventually disappearing in way for new ones), I also believe in having a culture of respect within street-art and graffiti as well.

And yknow, that said, cracked_logic does have at least ONE good point, and that's that people need to lighten up. Yeh, the tagger pulled a totally dick move, yeh I'm all for criticizing it, but it's nothing to get enraged over or wish for violence over. Life and street-art will go on and with any luck this artist will force more 8-Bit cross-talk into our lives.

Oh, and this is not to say that I disapprove of the comments war on here at all, go ahead and debate your hearts out. Just TRY to keep it civil. Peaz.

to end the debate: the tag is lame, but it is part of the cycle. i put the piece there knowing it would get dirty, and tagged, and then stolen, but it's cool to see that people appreciate the process and the way of things. i'm glad someone documented this, some other blog even gave an art school-esque critique of the empty pipe after it had been stolen.

:D

what a lame comment. how is tagging this justified? the idea of this existing is genius. the whole idea of surprising people with a quick jusxtapose of pixel art and game graphics on the street in 3d form, that's street art. it's making people stop and causing alot of happiness. some kid with nothing better to do and need's his fixes and alternatives to masturbating by drawing on this is nothing, it's not street, it's not art, it's putting a sticker on your forehead that says, "human blowjob." the idea of scribbling stupid shit all over it just make's you a tool. and supporting that just makes you look a tooler tool who wants to have a say or some pivot for the sake of conflict. what is street art without ethics? you have no value. i'm sure you don't pee on the floor or on your relatives or in the sink, you pee in a phucking bowl where piss belongs. and that scrawl looks like garbage. i've seen 3 year olds testing pens at a stationary store that's doodled better than that. range. value. yeh those things exist. use your brain and stop letting semen foam out your mouth.
