Looks more like a poster for Beltane, than for Worker's Day, imo.

Funny that it doesn't seem very May Day-ish to you -- here's the inspiration, which dates from the beginning of May Day in the late 19th century: libcom.org/files/garland%20for%20mayday.jpg

Wonderful poster.
As to Perecca, May Day has pagan roots so much of the traditional imagery will indeed look similar to Beltane. In fact, I like them to celebrate them as a single holiday with multiple facets and multiple names, a "green root" and a "red root."
Walter Crane had the right idea, and I love this update.

Hey Hugh,
Found your image via Google and posted it on my Tumblr and Facebook... only to realise when I linked back to your page that "hughillustration" was none other than Hugh D'Andrade... it's Paul Clifton here, from way back in LP days in Oakland and Melbourne in the 90s.
Love your work - as always - and love the serendipity of the interwebs that it was your May Day pic I chose from pages of googled images!
Have a great day comrade, peace and love from Melbourne!
Paul
