Landslides caused by heavy rains killed at least 50 people in the coastal city of Angra dos Reis, 150km from Rio de Janeiro, on the night of December 31st, 2009. Approx. 30 died at the pousada (hostel) Sankay, on the island of Ilha Grande, while another 20 died in the favela of Morro da Carioca, above the city center.
