Kevin found one of these in a thrift store when he was home for break. We took it apart to see how it works — no easy feat, these toys were really well-made.

hello dear friends~
we can all use a reminder now and then of those innocent times~
trying so hard today to gently gently row my simple little boat.

hey rose~ how did that work out? i know what you're talking about,
as i've taken many fisher-price toys apart in my day. did you know that the very old see & say (with the pull string) actually had a teeny little record player inside that made the sound!
rosafina121 (63 months ago | reply)
Taking the toy apart was a cool experience in that something I really wondered about as a child (and had since forgotten) was about to be answered — and the answer came about because of my own child’s curiosity. The experience transported me back to actual feelings I had as a child. As to the innards — simple gears and a music box. Kevin plans on using all or part of the toy in future work.
I didn’t know that the old See & Says have a record player inside... hmmm... I will have to find one and take it apart... :—))
On rowing simple little boats — stay centered, sometimes you just have to go with the flow.

i like it when things come around full-circle. then the universe seems
to fall into place. like, oh yes, that's how it's supposed to be! naturally
your son would reintroduce you to a question you had as a child.
i'm planning a post tomorrow a detail of a painting i made featuring
one of these FP TV sets that i took apart, replaced the picture scroll
inside and put it back into working order.
if you find a see & say it has to be one with the pull string (harder
to find) not sure how the newer ones (with the lever) work.
but those teeny record players were so cool. i took one apart,
scratched the record so it skipped and put it back together.
then sometimes it would go: this is a pig. moooooooooo.
the duck says: woof woof.
aahhhh, youth.

hey, ping, have you heard the chipmunk's version of "row, row, row your boat"? alvin, simon, and theodore sing it in a round (i sing all the parts when i sing it alone:)))
rosafina121 (63 months ago | reply)
another long forgotten childhood memory — the string pulled See & Say that had seen better days — the duck said moo, the cow quack quack. :—))

hey nicole! when are you going to put your version on youtube?
Neshamah Spirit Art (63 months ago | reply)
if you mean, when am i going to sing the chipmunk's version on youtube? never!!
it took me long enough to get over my shyness in commenting and exposing myself here on flickr (and still am moving through that...).
